White Castle Vineyard is situated in the rolling hills of Monmouthshire close to Abergavenny and Monmouth. This Welsh estate is owned and run by Robb and Nicola Merchant who planted their first vines in 2009. The vineyard sits on a gentle south facing slope of rich clay soil which helps produce quality grapes for both still and sparkling wines.

What You Can Do

Visitors can book guided tours of the vineyard led by the owners who share the history of the site and details of Welsh viticulture. Tastings take place in the purpose built tasting room or on the outdoor terrace overlooking the vines. Guests can sample a selection of red white and sparkling wines while learning about the production process from vine to bottle.

What They Offer

The estate offers a range of Welsh wines including their signature Pinot Noir Precoce and sparkling white and rosé varieties. For accommodation there is a beautifully renovated cottage located on the edge of the vineyard grounds. This self catering cottage provides a peaceful base for visitors wishing to stay longer. There are also occasional structured wine workshops and seasonal harvest events.

Activities

Beyond the guided vineyard walks guests can explore the beautiful local countryside on foot. The historic White Castle which gives the vineyard its name is just a short walk away. The surrounding Monmouthshire lanes are popular for cycling and the nearby Wye Valley offers opportunities for canoeing and hiking.

Food to Eat

The tasting room serves platters made with Welsh cheeses charcuterie and local breads designed to pair with the estate wines. The ingredients are sourced from nearby producers in Monmouthshire showcasing regional flavours. For more formal dining the town of Abergavenny is a short drive away and features several celebrated local restaurants.

Why Visit

This Welsh vineyard provides an authentic look at cool climate wine production in a relaxed rural setting. The personal involvement of the owners creates a welcoming atmosphere where visitors can learn about viticulture without pretension.

The tasting experience is highly informative and the local food platters are excellent. The cottage accommodation is comfortable though booking well in advance is necessary due to high demand. A minor drawback is the limited opening hours during the winter season.
